This poster presents a pilot study rationale and research methodology for problem solving complexities in understanding Systems Design using an Augmented Reality intervention. This approach can assist students from an Information and Communication Technology class who face difficulties in translating and comprehending a System from a theoretical paper based abstract. Augmented Reality applications and available technology will be used to improve active learning by using embedded learning materials in a tutorial system design classes; this will be compared with a traditional lesson. The complexities of System design thinking are difficult to visualise without a factual model. The proposed intervention uses an augmented reality iPad/Tablet application programmed with free available tools for prototyping and translating concepts into reality in an iterative fashion. Using a simple use case diagram, actors and data will be modeled to resemble a physical environment and data can be moved between the specific actors and the system. This proposed Augmented Reality intervention will impact students learning by assisting students to visualise complex systems. It is expected to improve student outcomes compared to a traditional tutorial teaching approach. This can also promote self-directed learning, automated assessment and formative feedback to assess learners based on their actions.
