This task was susceptible to interference from both a spatial task (rote tapping) and a verbal task (mouthed articulatory suppression) and also from the presence of irrelevant speech. Effects were comparable to those found with a serial verbal task that was generally similar in demand characteristics to the spatial task. As a generalization, disruption of the serial recall of visuospatial material was more marked if the interference conditions involved a changing sequence of actions or materials, but not if a single event (tap, mouthed utterance, or sound) was repeated.Jones, D, Farrand, P, Stuart, G & Morris, N 1995, 'Functional equivalence of verbal and spatial information in serial short-term memory', Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, memory and cognition, vol. 21, no. 4, pp.1008-1018, http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/0278-7393.21.4.1008Category 1 - Australian Competitive Grants (this includes ARC, NHMRC)Copyright 1995 American Psychological Association.en-ausC1 – Journal Article (Refereed)Short-term memory.Pure basic research.ANZSRC (2008) : Type of Activity (TOA)anzsrctoa970117 Expanding Knowledge in Psychology and Cognitive Sciences.ANZSRC (2008) : Socio-economic objective (SEO)anzsrcseo170201 Computer Perception, Memory and Attention.ANZSRC (2008) : Fields of Research (FOR)anzsrcfor170112 Sensory Processes, Perception and Performance.ANZSRC (2008) : Fields of Research (FOR)anzsrcfor170199 Psychology not elsewhere classified.ANZSRC (2008) : Fields of Research (FOR)anzsrcforMemoryTesting.Recollection (Psychology)Memory --Serial --Recall --Short term --Position --SpatialJournal Article.Refereed, Scholarly JournalacquireACQUIRECollectionFarrand, Paul.Stuart, George.Morris, Niel.Central Queensland University. Not affiliated to a Research Institute.QCQUUniversity of Wales.College of Cardiff.University of Wolverhampton.Journal of experimental psychology : learning, memory, and cognition.United States : American Psychological Association, 1995.Vol. 21, no. 4 (1995), p. 1008-101811 pages21:4<1008Refereed0278-7393ACQUIRE [electronic resource] : Central Queensland University Institutional Repository.Full-text options.http://hdl.cqu.edu.au/10018/922398Published version. Please use this identifier to link to this item.http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/0278-7393.21.4.1008
