A mixed methods approach, chiefly qualitative methods was used to research in high schools to identify the leadership attributes of principals that maximise the inspiration of a school team to engage at peak performance. Contextualised by a literature review to explore leadership approaches and leadership behaviours that appeal to a team's inner motivations from a neuroscience and psychological perspective. An analysis of the data revealed three clear themes of building trust to calm the brain stem, establishing rapport associated with the limbic system and stimulating growth associated with the prefrontal cortex. The findings provide evidence to support the social cognitive neuroscience approach to leadership and has broad implications for leadership development programs beyond schools.
