Timber bridges have long been a part of the transportation network throughout Australia. This report investigates, the aspects of the preparation of standard designs such as design loads, timber species and design stresses.

The continued need to maintain timber bridges is highlighted as are some of the techniques that can be used. Alternatives to conventional timber decking which are discussed include Lysaght steel decking, plywood decking, concrete overlays and prestressed concrete deck units.

A number of standard drawings are included in the appendices. This report is a compilation of information on timber bridges which may be of assistance to those who are confronted with the maintenance of timber bridges for the first time.
