The first part of this research involved an in-depth study of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and chemometrics techniques for the quantification of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and sodium chloride in an aqueous environment. The study was then extended with the hydrolysis of carbonate species being taken into account. The aim was to determine the precision and limit of detection (LOD) of the NIRS technique as an analytical tool for alkali measurement.
