The study assessed the utility of measurements of biological parameters derived from periphyton communities developed on artificial substrates in the estimation of the contribution of periphyton to the productivity of beds of aquatic macrophytes. The study site chosen was Western Springs Lake in suburban Auckland, New Zealand where the aquatic macrophyte beds consist almost exclusively of the introduced species Egeria densa Planch.
