"This research aimed to construct a program of support for acculturating individuals through the creation of a cultural learning proram that promotes a positive sense of cultural competence. Social Cognitive Theory was applied as a unifying framework to accommodate both the behavioural and psychological concomitants of cultural transition, in addition to other pertinent factors such as personal, behavioural and environmental elements. An initial qualitiative study explored the acculturation experiences of 14 Japanese international university students studying in Australia. The data analysis revealed six common themes that influenced students' perception of acculturation: language, racism, age, social connectedness, self-efficacy and wellbeing. These themes were subsequently incorporated into the design of a one-day cultural learning program involving group-focused participative activities, and interactions with Australians in local settings"--Abstract.
