This report presents an independent evaluation of the Read4Life community literacy program for State Library Queensland (SLQ) and BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal (BMC). The Read4Life community literacy program aims to develop community awareness and knowledge of the importance of literacy and strategies to develop the pre-literacy competence of parents/families/caregivers in the Mackay and Moranbah communities of Central Queensland, Australia. The impetus to commit to the Read4Life program was due to concerns raised in BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal’s (BMC) analysis of Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) findings that showed some vulnerabilities for Mackay and Moranbah children in the domains of language and literacy.
