Port surveys for introduced marine species : background considerations and sampling protocols

There are over 100 exotic marine species reported from Australian water. Almost all these species are unintentional introductions associated with mariculture and shipping activities. The importance of the different introduction methods has changed over various phases of Australian maritime history; hull fouling and ballast water discharge by shipping remain important vectors for the entry of exotic species into Australian ports.
