Ecologists argue that the root of the environmental crisis lies in the culture over nature interpretation of modern capitalist theory, which fosters hierarchies and exploitative practices, leading to all forms of subjugation. Ecological feminists (or ecofeminists) further argue that the culture over nature interpretation stems from a patriarchal mindset that predates capitalism and resonates in the subjugation of women. Hence, for ecofeminists, a change in attitude towards nature cannot eventuate until a change in attitude towards women is evident.
