Investigating the potential bioactivity of plants and remedies used in Indigenous Australian medicine

CQUniversity collaborates closely with Central Queensland communities to explore the medicinal benefits of Australian flora and fauna, emphasizing disease treatment. Supported by the BHP Chair in Indigenous Engagement, this ongoing research investigated the potential bioactivity of Gumbi Gumbi, a plant traditionally used for medicinal purposes. Pittosporum angustifolium, or Gumbi Gumbi, is recognized by Indigenous communities for its medicinal significance, utilized for various health conditions. Uncle Steve Kemp's provision of Gumbi Gumbi plant samples between December 2021 and March 2022 enhanced this research effort. The study explores Gumbi Gumbi's chemical composition and health benefits, revealing potent antioxidant properties and promising cytotoxicity against cancer cells. Going forward the Bioactive and Functional Foods Research Group at CQUniversity will seek to focus on Gumbi Gumbi's potential in blood sugar control, aiming to inform commercial practices and advance therapeutic applications through rigorous analysis and evaluation.
