"In 1983 The Hawke Federal Labor Government committed successive governments to developing policies and programs to improve the staus of women by ratifying the United Nations Convention on the elimination of all laws of Discrimination against women (CEDAW). Prior to this lobby groups had pressured State and Federal governments for action to address inequity in education for girls. Inparticular there had been identified the lack of participation of girls in subjects in schools that allowed boys greater access into university courses leading to higher-paid employment."--p. 1.
