The research investigated how many international trekkers to Nepal do or do not familiarise themselves with tourist health care information prior to departure from their country of origin. The problem is addressed by identifying and examining different strategies undertaken by trekkers to Nepal and the Himalaya region. Discussions surrounding the seeking out of necessary health care information that could be better managed by health care professionals and by the trekkers themselves before they leave home were examined. Linking observance of pre-trip health advice sought to travel health outcomes, the study further contrasts differences between English speaking trekkers in the Himalaya region in Nepal with regards to health care information before departure for trekking. While older trekkers made visits to health care professionals, and almost all had undergone stringent health care regimes before leaving their country of origin, it is evident that some younger travellers were less concerned about their health care needs while trekking in and around the Nepal. Encouraged self-responsibility in obtaining pre-trip medical treatment and advice, particularly regarding AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness [Altitude Sickness]) and the use of Diamox (Acetazolamide), before undertaking treks around the Himalaya region provides a focus for both the tourism industry and the medical fraternity to achieve.
