Paipa means windward in the Kala Lagaw Ya language of the Western Torres Strait Islands.
The CD focuses on seven themes directly related to the historical and contemporary experiences of Torres Strait Islanders: maritime industry songs, cane cutting songs, World War 2 Era songs, instrumental ‘Malay’ songs, young people and the environment songs, Coming of the Light religious songs and contemporary religious songs. The ‘young people and the environment’ songs include four performed by primary school students at Thursday Island Primary School. They had learnt the songs as part of their cultural curriculum.
