Torres Strait maritime songs of longing and belonging
The musical artistic expression of the Indigenous peoples in Australia is commonly connected to notions of place. Consequently, it is also linked to musical artistic expressions of longing and belonging; two affective emotions readily expressed through music and lyrics. In academic research about such notions, there have been many in-depth examinations of how Aboriginal Australians use music, both traditional and contemporary, to connect people to 'country', to each other and sound to emotion.
