The unadorned truth : the film documentaries of Larry Thomas

journal contribution
posted on 2017-12-06, 00:00 authored by Ian Gaskell
Beginning with Compassionate Exile (1998), a film on leprosy, and continuing with A Race for Rights (2001) on the George Speight coup, Bittersweet Hope (2004) on the sugar industry and expiring land leases, and recently Struggling for a Better Living: Squatters in Fiji (2007), Larry Thomas has candidly addressed a number of Fiji's unsightly social problems. As with his plays, the documentaries present an image of Fiji that many would prefer to remain hidden.
