When one hears the term patient advocate,
the image of a nurse is often the first professional
that comes to mind, and indeed the role
of ‘nursing advocacy’ has been widely discussed
in the literature. It should be remembered
however, that the nursing profession does
not hold a monopoly on patient advocacy; all
health care professionals, regulated or not, have
a responsibility to advocate for their patients.
