"ALTHOUGH not an expectation of experienced practitioners, close scrutiny of performance is an accepted part of the profession for early career teachers in Australia. Specifically in Queensland, the context for the research presented here, beginning teachers are required to serve a twelve-month period of provisional registration before they are formally accepted into the teaching profession. This process is a prerequisite for all beginning teachers and is overseen by the Queensland Board of Teacher Education. Within the school, the individual responsible for reporting on the appraisal of these teachers holds a senior position usually the principal or head of department."
