Ischaemic stroke patients routinely undergo a carotid and vertebral ultrasound examination and the study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of the ultrasound examination in aligning to a prediction of the patients’ clinical outcome in the long and medium terms. This was a retrospective study of 309 ischaemic stroke patients who all had a carotid and vertebral ultrasound examination. The patients were followed up on an average 9.4 months post-ultrasound examination, via telephone, to assess the clinical outcome, that is, level of dependency or death.
