Postcolonial theory in the literature classroom : contrapuntal readings

During the past decade, the restructuring of the global economy has created situations in which many more people from different cultures must meet and work together in new ways. The rapid development of communication technology, the removal of racist immigration prohibitions, the lowering of restrictive tariff barriers, and the desire to capitalize upon "cheap" labor and to create new markets have precipitated these changes. People from very different cultures are now interacting with each other in ways other than as colonial master/mistress and colonized servant.
