Migration: Broadening the A-level course

Population geography has long been an important and popular part of A-level syllabuses. Within these syllabuses, most attention has been paid to population growth, focused on the Demographic Transition Model, which has been developed into studies of the 'population problem', with particular reference to world inequalities in population growth, distribution and density. Migration as a factor in population change can be ignored at the world scale, because it is a closed system. The concentration on fertility and mortality patterns and their effects on population growth has, however, been to the detriment of migration studies in schools.
