Mental health nursing: what it is or what it does?

journal contribution
posted on 2017-12-06, 00:00 authored by Brenda Happell
We hear so often that nurses constitute the majority of the mental health workforce, but mental health nursing is about so much more than just numbers. Nurses are well placed to meet the complex biological, physical, social, and psychological issues experienced by people diagnosed with a mental illness. The undergraduate and postgraduate preparation for mental health nursing, despite the acknowledged difficulties, continues to evolve to equip the mental health nurses of the future with the skills and knowledge they need to work closely and effectively with consumers.
