Over the decades, improved understandings of stress and trauma responses, advances in science, and effective treatments have led to greater levels of acceptance of people with mental illness in many countries (Horsfall et al., 2010; Lee & Seo, 2020). Supernatural or religious explanations for mental illness (Tasca et al., 2012), together with the social exclusion of people with mental illness in institutions (Raeburn et al., 2023), have given way to community integration, with families and peers playing a key role in supporting people with mental illness in their homes. Contemporary workplaces strive to facilitate mentally healthy work environments, health services acknowledge the interconnectedness of mental and physical health, and diverse interventions and treatments continue to improve and become more accessible (Belloni et al., 2022; Schomerus et al., 2012).
