Since 2010, the editors of the Australasian Journal on Ageing (AJA) have organised ‘Writing for Publication’ workshops at regional national and international conferences in ageing. The general aims of these workshops are to encourage quality writing and quality reviewing, to familiarise early career ageing researchers with AJA, and of course to encourage them to submit to the journal. The workshops are run once or twice per year, at regional gerontology conferences (recently, Australia, New Zealand and Thailand). Some benefits to the journal have been an increasing profile at regional meetings, increased journal submissions, enrolment of new reviewers and ongoing contact with our potential authors. Attendees are always very positive about their workshop experience, and their expressed expectations and needs at the start are always met by the end of the session.
