This paper follows the theory postulated by Corder and developed along differing lines by other writers such as Giles, Gardner, Lambert and Richards. The field of study is drawn from the findings in psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and social psychology, and examines the interplay between and interdependence of psychological and social elements in second language acquisition. This paper draws on these fields of study in order to document the factors involved in second language acquisition and the implications for the classroom teacher.
