Environmental management systems in small and medium businesses

journal contribution
posted on 2017-12-06, 00:00 authored by Catherine Mckeiver, David Gadenne
This study examines the various external, moderating and internal factors that may influence the implementation of an environmental management system within a limited sample of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Both formal and informal environmental management systems were considered within this study. The results indicate that age, customers, and employees' concerns were significantly associated with the informal level of implementation of an environmental management system. Although the strategies identified as being used in practice indicate that the majority of businesses are following a resistent strategy, there is hope in the prospect that SMEs will continue to listen to their relevant publics and continue to improve their environmental management systems. Implications and suggestions for further research are also stated.
