The assumption is often made that the 'migrant' pupil will be able to follow to some degree both the written subject material and the language through which the subject material is presented after a brief period in intensive English classes. By looking at the language used in the classroom this paper shows that such an assumption would presume a knowledge of the language that could not be gained through a relatively short English as a Second Language course.
