The well-publicized appearance of the Sunday Australian (1971-1972), launched in Sydney seven years after the daily Australian, coincided with an important new phase in the expansion of Rupert Murdoch’s News Limited. This paper examines the short-lived success of the Sunday Australian as a quality newspaper, in the context of changing readership expectations in both Australia and the UK, and in relation to the success of new British publications like the Sunday Times.
