The research investigated how international trekkers to Nepal familiarise themselves with tourist healthcare information prior to departure. The problem is addressed by identifying different strategies undertaken by trekkers in Nepal. Discussions about the seeking out of healthcare information that could be better managed by healthcare professionals and by the trekkers themselves before they leave home were examined. Linking observance of pretrip health advice sought to travel health outcomes, the study contrasts differences between English speaking trekkers in Nepal regarding healthcare information before departure. While older trekkers made visits to healthcare professionals, it is evident that some younger travellers were less concerned about their healthcare needs while trekking. Encouraged self responsibility in obtaining pretrip medical advice, particularly regarding AMS and the use of Diamox, before undertaking treks within Nepal provides a focus for both the tourism industry and the medical fraternity to achieve.
