This paper outlines the first phase in an investigation into the use of mobile devices for learning and their potential for expanding the opportunities for online education and training in rural areas across Australia. The first stage examines the feasibility of using mobile phones for training while the second stage is a pilot study investigating the delivery of a short training course in three modes of delivery; face-to-face, mobile phones and via a Learning Management System. Issues of content design, levels of support for the learners and use of SMS have had to be addressed.
