The increasing number of international students pursuing their studies overseas has created diversity within tertiary education institutions. The classroom now consists of students from very different cultural backgrounds. Teachers are confronted with new challenges in their teaching: teaching a multicultural classroom requires particular skills. Local and international students likewise require skills as well as attitudes that enable them to interact with each other. The paper discusses the importance of cross-cultural sensitivity and understanding, and how this can be enhanced in international education in order to produce a more global citizen able to relate to people from diverse backgrounds.
