Abstract: Mixed methods research has begun to emerge as what has been heralded as a new era in research. Like the mythology of the phoenix, mixed methods research has arisen out of the ashes of the paradigm wars to become the third methodological movement (Cameron & Miller 2007). The fields of applied social science, evaluation and nursing are among those which have shown the greatest popularity and uptake of mixed methods research designs. This paper provides a brief overview of the rise of mixed methods research, its usage across the social sciences and business and management fields before introducing the conceptual framework of the Five Ps of mixed methods research. The Five Ps include: Paradigms; Pragmatism; Praxis; Proficiency; and Publishing. The Five Ps framework will be used to structure an exploration of some of the key challenges facing those who choose the innovative path of mixed methods research and some of the key areas for capacity building. The small but growing body of literature focused upon the teaching of mixed methods research will be explored and aspects of this will be embedded within the Five P framework. The Five Ps framework can provide those wishing to embark into mixed methods research with the essential components of a mixed methods starter kit, inclusive of a contemporary checklist of contentious issues, risks and traps that require consideration. The framework also offers higher degree supervisors and educators with a pedagogic tool for guiding and teaching mixed methods.
