This paper presents our experience at Central Queensland University in the teaching of control system design skills using a combination of traditional lecture/tutorial and project-based learning environment. The course re-design was in response to the Institution of Engineers, Australia's call for a greater emphasis in the development of graduates' generic attributes. The result of our first offering, as judged by students' feedback, is satisfying. The grasp of control system concepts and student attitude towards learning appears to be greater than that environment alone.
