Much debate has centred on the use of educational technologies which allow interaction between students and their teachers. This paper provides an overview and explanation of the terminology used in online learning enviromnents. Attention is give to the pedagogical theory that informs use of' various online technologies in ·education. The focus is on teclmologies which support interaction amongst a dispersed student population and academic staff.
