OCASD-Channel-Aware scheduling for multi-service wireless IP networks

The success of emerging converged multi-service Wireless IP networks relies on low-complexity and hence power efficient channel-aware schedulers tailored for packet switching transport technology. Such schedulers should provide differentiated QoS to support multi-service traffic while exploiting channel information to maximise total system throughput. This paper discuses an opportunistic channel-aware scheduling called OCASD (Optimum Channel-Aware Scheduling with Service Differentiation) which is driven by both instantaneous channel quality of mobiles and traffic QoS requirements. OCASD evolved from the BL2xF scheme proposed in [1] and [2]. Numerical examples under burst-error channel show that OCASD isolates queues while optimising wireless bandwidth efficiency. Figure 8 shows that OCASD outperforms round robin scheduling, and that the achievable average throughput increases with the number of mobiles in a service area due to increasing multiuser diversity.
