Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) is a multi locational, multi faceted, multi million-dollar operation that has been successful in diversifying its business profile and rediscovering itself over the last few years in particular. In recent times the Bachelor of Jazz Studies programme at the Conservatorium, based In Mackay, has had successful student growth and sign ificant audition/application growth to match. The programme currently attracts students from all over Australia and beyond. The programme has a strong performing bias reflected in the extraordinary array of performing opportunities throughout the Central Queensland Region, in particular, developed by staff and enjoyed by students. A recent development -a creative and strategic alliance between CQCM and Hamilton Island Enterprises (Whitsundays) provides a new teaching and learning paradigm that is as much about performing and edutourism as it is about quality face to face and ensemble teaching. In a unique, partner driven concept -Jazz Studies on Hamilton Island provides the Conservatorium with a highly cost effective model for the future; provides staff and students Involved in the programme with a unique teaching and learning opportunity; and at the same time forges an exciting and sustainable strategic alliance between important players all focused on doing things 'differently' -all focused on doing things well. This paper explores the alliance issues; the strategic model issue; the operational model and the possible future implications of a tropical island classroom -complete with multiple performance venues and opportunities.
