International Women Backpackers in Australia: Seeking Authentic Experience. Recent research shows that international backpackers to Australia travel for longer than other tourists, adhere to a budget while travelling and journey far more widely than other travellers. Further, much current research ignores the gender bias and does not specifically apply to women. However, despite growing sociological attempts to address this issue, it still remains prevalent in much of the literature and research. My current project on international female backpackers in Australia has led me to investigate the reasons for their travel to this country and the issues connected to this. Their experiences have wider implications for Australia, as a tourist destination, and have an effect on Australian communities at both a local and global level.
