This paper discusses the culture necessary for industrial innovation, in particular the importance of developing relationships and trust between researchers and industry personnel. Central Queensland is rapidly developing as an industry cluster in minerals and chemical processing and the well-known economist Michael Porter has identified the characteristics of such geographical relationships and the benefits of industry, government and universities working together to enhance competitiveness. These issues will be discussed in the context of the Process Engineering and Light Metals, PELM Centre, a partnership between local industry, government and Central Queensland University to foster R&D and innovation.
