Enhancing an oral tradition online

conference contribution
posted on 2017-12-06, 00:00 authored by Robert Mcdougall, Renay Buchanan
There are many elements of mathematics that involve logical processes and algorithms - material for which the text book author can sometimes struggle to describe because of the constraints of the printed page. Of particular interest are mathematical processes that are often represented only in completed form when encountered on the printed page and those that are difficult to discuss via telephone consultation or an email exchange. Two online resources, simulations and worked examples with audio enhancement, were created to help nurture an understanding ofthe underlying principles. Our work sought to uncover online solutions to recreating a tutorial experience that were robust, easily replicated across the discipline (and beyond) and involved communications technologies that are widely accessible and easy to use.
