In the last decades there have been great advances in electronic, information and communication technologies. Up to date, any of these advances have been implemented in electrical systems, but some difficulties have been encountered, particularly regarding to the integration of intelligent electronic devices from different manufactures into a centralized system and minimizing implementing time and manual configuration. With the aim of solving the above mentioned problem, communication architecture for smart meters network is one of the challenging tasks to visualize the distribution network into digital world under communication standard IEC 61850. In smart meter network, thousand of smart meters will be interconnected; it will require standard communication infrastructures to coordinate with numerous technologies and increase security and success of the network technology. In this paper, the communication standard IEC 61850 is proposed as a future proof, adaptable communication standard capable of providing interoperability in distribution network and ensuring network security.
