CQUniversity is a recognised leader in the learning analytics field and is investigating a new approach to help with student cohort management within the innovative Bedifferent platform. Bedifferent is a disruptive online learning platform developed by CQUniversity and is based upon the Moodle Learning Management System. The Bedifferent platform allows students to enrol at any time and does not have semesters or assessment due dates. Students can progress through their course at their own pace and on a unit pathway of their own choosing. The absence of term boundaries and assessment due dates along with the flexibility of rolling enrolments creates a challenge for how we manage and monitor the student cohort. The usual indicators of student risk afforded by semesters and assessment due dates, coupled with the self-paced, course-level nature of Bedifferent, preclude a risk-intervention model favoured by many learning analytics implementations. While the absence of semesters and assessment deadlines may assist with student retention, students are still required to finish within five years. For an AQF
compliant coursework masters, this requires more than six hours per week over five years for the student to complete. Bedifferent is considering an alternative learning analytics approach that seeks to help the students to help themselves. Using Self Regulated Learning as a theoretical lens, students are provided with indicators of their progress, performance and projected finish dates. Students can monitor their own
effort and set effort-based goals that are centred upon either the amount of time they have available each week for study, or their targeted course completion date. This presentation provides an overview of the
innovative approach that Bedifferent is trialling with cohort management.
