An organisation attempting to continuosly innovate will experience significant tensions as it tries to innovate and maximise operational performance. It is important that we attempt to understand how an organisation can achieve operational effectiveness and optimise its innovative capacity while working strategically to sustain and improve organisational performance. This paper presents a theoretical framework for continuous innovation and suggests hypotheses for future studies, one of which will be the 3rd CINet survey. The paper draws together a diverse body of literature to support the framework and demonstrates the linkages between different capacities and organisational relationships.
