This chapter (1) provides a brief historical overview of nursing data collections, (2) describes and analyzes the essential data set initiatives around the world, (3) identifies the needs and purpose for the i-NMDS and (4) discusses the results of a pilot study related to the i-NMDS. It concludes with a view into the future in which the i-NMDS can be used to make nursing’s contribution to health statistically visible
