Synergies and exacerbations—effects of warmer weather and climate change

Urbanization and global climate change are increasing the ambient temperature in built environments, which are under strain during extreme heat conditions. All these dynamics have been investigated in depth and documented in the literature, while a systematic review of the synergies between heatwaves and urban overheating (UO) dynamics is needed. Here, such a review is presented first presenting the different phenomena and then the dimensions of human life affected by UO and heatwaves. Finally, the recent literature on the synergies between heatwaves and UO is examined, addressing the consistent findings as well as the studies presenting contrasting results and discussing the motivations. This chapter provides an organic overview of these intertwined climate phenomena.
