Plymouth is a city of a quarter of a million peopie and is the largest urban centre in the Southwest peninsula. The major industrial base is the Naval Dockyard, and there is still an important armed services presence in and around the city. During the war the dockyard area suffered enormous bomb damage, and the city ::1.s a whole was the worst-affected principal centre in England (Brayshay 1983). As a consequence, much of the city has been totally replanned and rebuilt, but areas of much older housing still remaln.
