Aimed at emerging researchers, including those in developing countries, this book also addresses cutting edge and newly developing research methods, which will be of equal interest to more experienced researchers. When understanding evaluation, you will use the research methods, including data collection and analysis, outlined in other chapters. However, the major distinction between research and evaluation hinges on the intention of the activity. Research aims to create generalisable theory or knowledge about the world. Evaluation is concerned with making judgment about the value of something or testing some practical solution to a problem. It is the act of making a judgment about the merit or worth of something that is what makes evaluation a unique discipline and distinct from research.
