This paper focuses on prospective teachers' understanding of being primary teachers as they interact in the first year with stakeholders on the university and school sites, and possible influences of being out in front of a class. It is argued that some teacher entrants clarify their impressions of their chosen career during the first year. Comparison at the commencement of the course, and what being a teacher means to them at the end of the first year, can have implications for their future career paths.
