This chapter introduces the reader to the health literacy concept by exploring the development and use of health literacy in conjunction with inclusive practice to facilitate the promotion and management of health. Health literacy is an important social determinant of health. A person's health literacy; that is, their health knowledge, skills and abilities, will significantly affect the delivery and understanding of professional and therapeutic communication, subsequently influencing health behaviour and outcomes.
