George Landen Dann was arguably Queensland's first major playwright. While other Queensland writers before that time did write plays, including Arthur Hoey Davis (Steele Rudd) and Vance Palmer, these writers wrote predominantly in other literary forms. Dann was first and foremost a playwright, winning numerous playwriting competitions and having his work performed across Australia and internationally. Many of his works were rewritten and produced for radio and one was converted for television. His work broke new ground with several of his plays examining the plight of Aboriginal Australians at the time.
