This book has used case studies to help students understand the evolving nature of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Australia. Case studies were chosen as they provided a critical analytical framework to examine the various issues faced by the owners and managers of SMEs. The case study approach could be viewed as an exercise in learning by doing, as this mode of learning provides the reader with detailed contextual information about the changes and opportunities for different industries and companies in different settings. The case study approach provides students with the ability to improve their analytical skills and expose them to the real situations faced by company managers in the performance of their strategic responsibilities.
